Why IT skills are essential in recruiting - A personal experience report from our CEO Gagat
October 2024
As a CEO and IT consultant who actively works on projects as a data architect, I have experienced many different recruiting processes in my career. Unfortunately, many of them were unsatisfactory or even frustrating. I would like to share my experiences with you and show you why IT knowledge is essential for IT recruiters for your successful and sustainable IT specialist recruitment process.
Let's jump straight in. Me, in my role as an IT consultant: A good-sounding job offer lands on my desk, placed by an recruiter whowho has no IT experience. Therecruiter is very keen, but can't explain the specific requirements of the position in detail and can't answer my questions about the projects and the technology used.them provide any information. The interview remains superficial. I'm not sure whether the position really matches my skills and goals. I turn down the offer, even though the position itself could have been interesting - but the process doesn't give me the confidence I need.
So how many highly qualified IT specialists do not find their way into your company due to a lack of knowledge of the subject during communication and placement?
The difference: IT skills in recruiting
The IT market is highly competitive. IT expertise is essential for IT recruiters to ensure a trustworthy and professional communication channel with candidates and sustainable staffing solutions for their clients:
-
Understanding of the requirements of the position
Ae IT recruiter whowho has technical knowledge understands the specific requirements that come with a position such as a data architect, software developer or cloud engineer. Hecan assess the most important technologies, tools and frameworks and search specifically for candidates.inside who have the right qualifications and experience. Without this knowledge, the formulated requirements often remain superficial or even unsuitable and the matching between candidate and company becomes imprecise.
-
Communication at eye level with candidates
IT specialists like me don't just want to list their qualifications in the application, they also want to talk to someone whounderstands the complexity of our work. A recruiter whothe IT experience can better respond to candidates' technical questions and also creates a professional and trusting atmosphere. Candidates feel that they and their qualifications are better understood and are more open to engaging in the application process. This increases the likelihood that they will accept the position if the offer is a good fit.
-
More efficient and precise selection processes
The technical knowledge of aof an IT recruiter ensures that the pre-selection of candidates is much more efficient and precise. They recognize at first glance or at the latest in the interview which candidates really have the required qualifications. They don't just look at and enquire about keywords in CVs or interviews, but understand and know about specific versions, frameworks or certain architectures of tools, for example. In this way, thethe suitable candidate for the requirements can be found. This saves companies a lot of time and avoids costly misplacements.
Risks if IT knowledge is lacking
Conversely, it can be expensive for companies if ane recruiter does not have the necessary IT skills:
Miscasts: Ae recruiter*without IT expertise could select candidates who appear qualified on paper but do not have the necessary experience in practice. These misplacements can lead to projects being delayed, inefficient solutions being implemented or the position having to be filled again - an expensive and time-consuming process.
Missed opportunitiesAt the same time, qualified candidates can be overlooked if their skills and experience are not properly understood by the recruiter. Companies may miss out on the best talent because thethe recruiter does not recognize the importance of expertise.
Low satisfaction among specialistsIT professionals who realize during the interview that thethe recruiter does not understand their work are often quickly disillusioned. This leads to them abandoning the process or not even engaging with the company. A recruiting process that is technically adept, on the other hand, increases the likelihood that thethe candidate feels comfortable with the company in the long term and stays.
